Generally speaking I very much disapprove of films that seam to make light of mental illness. Me, Myself & Irene for instance isn't just badly made but it's a horrible concept and when I saw the ads for this I worried that it was more of the same. I was mistaken. There's a great deal of difference between making light of something and using it as the bases for a story and this is the latter.
Jerry is a nice man, handsome and enthusiastic, but like his mother before him he hears voices, some of which egg him on to be a good guy and some that don't. Jerry doesn't like to take his meds and after he hits a deer while giving a lift to Fiona we start to get flashes of what can happen when he doesn't.
Made by Iranian director Marjane Satrapi, this film is both very funny and heartbreaking. The charming Ryan Reynolds gives an outstanding performance in a way I'd never have given him credit for. Gemma Arterton is stunning and I felt real sympathy for Anna Kendrick.
Satrapi, who first came to light by writing and making the wonderful Persepolis, even managed to let the audience leave on a high after what is really a very sad story.
Don't let the interaction with the pets, which can be quite silly, change the focus of the film. It needs the sweet to cut the sour.
A honey and lemon film and I really enjoyed it.
