This horror show of a remake has absolutely none of the pacing style and sophistication of the Korean original as Spike Lee again takes a good cast and a great story and gives us nothing in return.
I feel genuinely bad for Elizabeth Olsen who isn't too awful but is swimming against a tide of shit and struggles to keep her head above water.
In one of the few Lee films where he doesn't make every white character a bigoted caricature you have to question the thought process behind Sam Jacksons red coat and Mohawk.
Sharlto Copley, so good in District 9, is being destroyed by Hollywood and that's sad. Where in his alleged upbringing would he have got this "British" accent and why would the son of a billionaire be in the same school as a thug and a Bronx barman?
The film misses on every level, from the underlying loneliness of the original to his self satisfied smirk at the end (What the fuck has he got to smile about?) and the directors constant cinematic nods to the first film, the hammer, a shot of an octopus etc, are really a bit of an insult.
I'm equally as angry with whatever producer thought Spike Lee would be the right man for the job. Do The Right Thing is a wonderful film, a great example of doing what you know about, but after that the coincidence of Denzel Washington turning out to be a top notch actor doesn't make him a top notch director.
I'll finish with a plea to Hollywood....
Get the fuck away from my favourite films before you do any more damage!
