Dark Star (1974)

John Carpenter's first full motion picture will excite any fan of science fiction. It takes instantly recognizable influence from Kubrick and Clarke with its self-aware bomb with a god complex and is in itself extremely innovative in its use of cheap props and clever concepts.
In what is probably, and unsurprisingly, Carpenter's most complex movie the sci-fi buff will see Heinlein, Aldiss and Adams and will enjoy every minute of it.
Even if you don't like the genre, watch it as a study in great film making on a low low budget.
Wonderful fun!
