This fun and funny action movie, made by 2 relative unknowns but from an idea by Luc Besson, has Guy Pearce as an ex CIA operative sent to the first space-station prison to rescue the president's kidnapped daughter. Fighting his way through earth and space he finds himself having to deal with hundreds of psychopaths, a sassy female lead and a couple of government types including Peter "Where's the fucking money Lebowski" Stormare.
The dialogue is snappy from the outset and Pearce's Heinleinesque anti-hero is very well handled but there are holes in both the story and the production. A good many of the effects, in particular the chase at the beginning, just don't look very good. Some of the scenes feel rushed into and confused and the basic premise that being put into stasis would be a punishment is silly. Who wouldn't want to wake up 30 or 50 years in the future when all the people you've wronged are dead? Lastly the ending is a little flat as the effort put into the earlier dialogue seems to have run out.
It hardly matters though. Take it for what it is, a cheap little space romp that'll make you want Pearce to do more of this sort of thing.
