Sgt. Harry Palmer is transferred to a small department of military intelligence to investigate what's being termed the "brain drain". Government scientists are being kidnapped and returned having been brainwashed. Is it the Soviets, or something closer to home?
Palmer, produced by a lot of the same people that brought us Bond but known as the anti-Bond, is the original metro-sexual. He cooks, dresses well and looks after himself.
It's interesting to note that Palmer didn't feature in Len Deighton's novels.
In the books he is an unnamed and paranoid man working for a civil authority but this wouldn't have worked in the movies. Palmer was invented for, and by, Michael Caine, the name being a mix of producer Harry Saltzman and and a boy that Caine went to school with. Caine himself took his name from the movie The Caine Mutiny.
This is a gem of the espionage genera and features the outstanding mustache of Nigel Green and the brilliant Gordon Jackson, a man who spent 90% of his career being called Jock.
