One of the forgotten greats of British cinema has a young Alec Guiness at his charming best as chancer Denry Machin, out to earn a penny and rise to the top.
Made at Pinewood Studios by Ronald Neame, the man who brought us Miss Jean Brodie, The Odessa File and dozens of other classics. It features the wonderful Valerie Hobson, the beautiful Glynis Johns and a 20 year old Petula Clark, not to mention the all important Joey the Mule.
If you enjoy the films of Wes Anderson then this is the sort of thing for you.
The influence on the almost child-like charm of his main characters is plain to see here but, where his leads can sometimes seem a little self-conscious, Guiness does it with ease.
Much better to remember one of England's greatest actors for films like this than for Star Wars, a part that the man himself hated.
This is a really lovely movie and I urge everyone to give it a go.
