Based on Ira Levin's conspiracy novel, we see a Simon Wiesenthal type Nazi hunter pitting his wits against Josef Mengele, the despicable doctor of Auschwitz who is determined to, through eugenics, bread a second Hitler. Mengele has been hiding for years in the forests of Brazil but when a young American secretly records him it's time to put things into motion. 94 men must die within days of each other, 94 boys with blue eyes and black hair must be raised in a certain way. Will Ezra Lieberman be able to spoil the evil doctor's plan or will the Reich rise again?
This much loved piece of silliness has a pretty spectacular cast. Gregory Peck has some terrible hair and make-up but is good and scary as Mengele, Laurence Olivier does his aged Jew routine very well and there are even turns from the wonderful James Mason and Bruno Ganz. Ganz will go on to play Hitler in the excellent Downfall.
There's nothing really spectacular about the production or direction on this one, it's all about the story and cast.
