Charming feel-good movie by writer and director Bill Forsyth.
Texas oil executive Mac MacIntyre is sent to rural Scotland to finish up on a land deal that would mean the building of a huge new refinery and money in the pockets of everyone in the local village. It would also mean buying up and building on the local beach and Ben, the old man that lives there and happens to own it, isn't about to budge. Everyone knows everyone in the village, Urquhart who is brokering the deal is also the landlord of the pub, and when the locals hear that the old man won't sell they're not best pleased. Mac calls his boss Mr Happer who comes over to make a deal with Ben and as they sit, drinking whisky and looking at the stars, they come to an arraignment.
The film is nicely shot and has an instantly recognisable soundtrack by Mark Knopfler, a soundtrack that sadly sold better than the film itself. Peter Riegert is good as Mac but the real stars of the show are the wonderful Fulton Mackay as Ben and Burt Lancaster as Happer whos relationship with his shrink is a quality little running gag through the first half of the movie.
It's a sweet film with a lovely relaxed and, if you'll pardon the expression, local feel about it.
