Originally made as a mini-series for French TV, this set of 3 feature films tell the true story of international terrorist Carlos the Jackal.
Ilich Ramirez Sanchez was, and indeed still is, a violent anti-capitalist revolutionary who aligned himself with the Palestinian liberation organisations of the 1970s and 80s.
The first of the three films focuses on his early career as a terrorist in Europe, his relationships with various women, the killing of two French counter-intelligence agents in France and the build up to the OPEC raid in Vienna where he and 5 others kidnapped 60 people and killed 3. The second film plays out the raid and the subsequent attempt to flee on a plane with 40 of the hostages. The third film covers his time in the Middle East, bomb attacks in France and Germany and finally his capture by French agents in the Sudan.
These are without a doubt the best quality, highest production value and best written 'made for TV' movies I've ever seen. The multi-national/multi-lingual cast are outstanding with the films featuring at least half a dozen languages. Édgar Ramírez is a revelation as Carlos and his method is great, as is the director's who used newsreel clips of the real Carlos and recordings made by the Stasi for some of the dialogue. The films were directed and in part written by French director Olivier Assayas who is probably best known for Paris, je t'aime. The whole series, five and a half hours worth, was filmed in just seven months with the final two hours being shot sequentially. Clever stuff.
